Traveling Vicariously Through Others

I'd like to offer a congrats to John and Heidi. Some time ago, they got engaged. Well now, they are officially married. In fact, they just returned from an awesome honeymoon to Italy which they both blogged about.

I must admit that reading about their trip made me very jealous, and reminded me of an Italy trip that Julie and I took a number of years ago with our friends Jill and Andy.

Following closely the trip on John's blog, I made the following comments:

I do not know if Venice is on your list, but that is the most beautiful city that Julie and I ever visited.
Unfortunately, Venice was not on their list of places to visit, John mentioned in his response. The trip seemed pretty amazing for them regardless. If I may say so, though, not visiting Venice the first time seems like a good reason to return in five years for an anniversary. :)

My comment on the leg of their trip to Rome went like this:
What I remember about Rome in comparison to Florence is that being in Florence was like being part of history no matter where you went. The narrow meandering streets surrounded by old buildings gave it that kind of feel.

Rome, on the other hand, feels like a modern city, filled with subways, glass store fronts, crazy traffic, and wide streets, but with these amazing pockets of history tucked away in various corners.
John agreed, indicating that he'd likely not return to Rome. What was funny about that response is that Julie, my wife, says the same thing about Rome: it was cool and amazing, but there is no reason to return in the future. Florence, on the other hand, is definitely a city to see again.

For all of John and Heidi's adventures, check out both their blogs and the one they do together.
